Legal Portal - Ministry of Justice in Kuwait |
|
|
|
General Description
The legal portal is a complete solution for a legal database covering the laws in countries of the Arab Gulf region (as a start: Kuwait, Qatar and United Arab Emirates). The portal will serve as a central database for the legislations in these countries and provides services for legislations management (a BackOffice) and publishing, and a public browse-and-search interface that serves legal professionals (judges, attorneys and researches) as well as other people - all that in an intuitive and easy to use web user interface.
Clients Background
The Legal portal is developed under the full sponsorship of the Ministry of Justice in Kuwait (MOJ). The MOJ in Kuwait has shown in the past few years complete adoption of the Information Tehcnology in most of its activities and services to the public in Kuwait and the world. It has already developed several “online” services as well, such as: http://www.moj.gov.kw
Technology used
The portal is developed using the Microsoft .NET platform and the SQL Server 2000 database. It includes custom-made search enhancements to cover Arabic language specific needs and lingual mutations of words. The solution was development in a Multi-Tier architecture with three factors in mind: performance, scalability and ease of maintenance.
Topology
Being a web application reached through the internet, the portal is available through a temporary link: http://62.215.234.226/MojPortalPublic (It will be available through a more friendly domain name soon).
Performance
Having a large database and a high expected visit rate, and since the services are interactive and include full and exhaustive search actions, the database layer and the presentation layers contained many optimazation strategies and components like caching, field and full text indexing - in the addition to the code level optimizations on the database and business logic. |

Al Balad and Al Qabas Newspapers |
|
|
|
General Description
With online quickly becoming the quickest and easiest way to build circulation and increase advertising revenue, publishers are shifting their focus to the web. Most analysts in the news market predict that newspapers will become primarily online products at varying paces over the next decade. Surveys done in the newspaper market indicate that the basic trend is unmistakable. The circulation rates are declining and daily reader are targeting the web. The Newspaper website solution presented facilitates publishing printed newspapers and magazines. The solution publishes news articles of the printed newspaper and presents them in various forms on web pages. It also handles all newspaper-related features including classifieds, voting, archive, latest news, news categories and urgent news. Moreover, the solution publishes various reader-related services and entertainment pages.
Technology Used
The website was built using the .NET Framework 1.1, ASP.NET, and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition. The website uses the Microsoft Search service, a full-text indexing and search engine. This service supports sophisticated searches on character string columns. Moreover, manipulating the text in the database by trimming all unnecessary prefixes and suffixes increased the precision of the search engine by finding words that are similar and exact to the search keywords. Besides this advanced search feature, all the website pages are optimized for search engines. Many techniques have been used to make the website pages easy bait for the search engine spiders. These techniques include: efficient construction of page titles, excessive use of anchors, and smart use of meta-tags with subject-related keywords.
Topology
The website is a public web application with a Back Office allowing authenticated users to remotely update the data contents on a daily basis.
Performance
The website is intended for huge amounts of information and information processing (search). It is also expected that a large number of users will try to access the website daily. For these reasons, optimization for performance is considered crucial for the success of the project. Performance objectives include response time, throughput, resource utilization, and workload. To meet these goals, output caching and application data caching were frequently use. Other techniques, such as using stored procedures, improving managed code, optimizing data access design, and less dependency on ASP .NET ViewState are also incorporated to increase the performance of the website.
